Treating Glaucoma with Lasers

Certain types of glaucoma eye disease or situations of glaucoma maybe treated with lasers Both our laser systems, the 532nm laser and the NdYAG laser are used in providing treatment to lower the intra-ocular pressure. Two of the laser treatments are described below.

Laser Iridotomy

Some patients have a narrow drainage system, which puts them at risk for angle closure glaucoma. Laser iridotomy is an in-office procedure that reduces the risk of angle closure glaucoma. Two types of lasers are used in conjunction to create an opening, the 532nm laser is first to thin out the iris tissue, then the ndYAG 1064nm laser is used to penetrate a small opening in the iris. Both of these lasers are located at ACS Eye Specialists Centre.

The opening is created in the upper part of the iris, covered by the eyelid, so that it is inconspicuous.

 

Argon laser trabeculoplasty

Laser trabeculoplasty uses a laser to open up the drainage angle of the eye. It is used in treating patients with open angle glaucoma that continues to get worse inspite of medication. It also is used for older adults who are unable to comply with medication.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is the newest form of laser treatment to manage open angle glaucoma. SLT is a simple and quick laser out-patient procedure done in the clinic. The ndYAG laser is used to stimulate cells in the trabecular meshwork to increase the drainage of the aqueous humor. This results in reducing the intra-ocular pressure which will help control the glaucoma.
