Eye bag surgery
(Blepharoplasty)

Part of the bain of growing older is that we start to look older noticeably around our eyes. The skin around the eyelids becomes more excessive and saggy, and in extreme cases may actually affect our vision by occluding it. Some people may do this surgery for cosmetic reasons, e.g. to look younger whereas in some it is to treat the blocking of our vision.

The name of the surgery to remove excess skin and reshape the eyelids is called blepharoplasty. The surgeon will assess the patient’s condition first to determine how much skin should be removed. This procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia and patients are generally comfortable during the procedure which may take 60-90mins depending on the amount of skin that needs to be removed and whether any additional procedures are done at the same time.

Incision lines are marked out first along the natural creases of skin. This is so that healing takes place without leaving noticeable scarring.

Excess skin is then removed and the wound is closed with sutures. In some cases, excessive fat may also be removed prior to wound closure.

For the first 1-2 weeks, some eyelid swelling and bruising is expected. This will resolve with time. Some people recover faster and some slower as healing is usually individualistic. Stitches are normally removed around 1 week after the surgery. You are advised not to do any strenuous activities e.g. heavy lifting for 3 weeks.
