YAG Laser Capsulotomy

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) may occur 10-40% of the time and can appear at any time after cataract surgery, even as late as five or more years later.

This capsule (behind the implanted artificial lens - IOL or intraocular lens) has cells on it which will, in some cases, continue to produce lens fibers. These fibers cannot be laid down in an organized manner and will form little beads or "pearls" on the lens capsule, forming a secondary membrane. When these pearls accumulate in the pupil, they cause a blurring of vision similar to that which one experiences with a cataract.

Our in house Nd:YAG laser at ACS Eye Specialist Centre is used to cut a hole in the clouded back lining of the lens capsule to allow light to pass through the IOL to the retina at the back of the eye. Our Nd:YAG laser is currently considered the best way to remove the back lining of the lens capsule.
