Surgical questions

Will I feel anything during surgery?
You will be given local anaesthesia at the time of surgery which may take the form of eyedrops or injections around the eye. Most patients just feel some pressure in the eye and not real pain.

What do I see during surgery?
Some patients see the bright lights of the microscope during the surgery. Others have experienced seeing some moving particles during the time of surgery.

Would a cough prevent me from having surgery?
It is very important that you don’t cough unexpectedly during surgery. If you have a very bad cough, it is usually safer to postpone the operation till you have recovered.

What will I be able to see right after the operation?
Most patients’ vision is quite blurred after the surgery from the dilating drops and the bright microscope lights.

What happens before I’m discharged?
We will also check your eye and explain how to take care of your own eye as well as what medications you need to take. An appointment is made for you to come for a check up the following day.

May I drive myself home?
It is not recommended, although some patients who see well out of their other eye and have not had any medication may drive.
